Yearly Rundown (2008)

2008 has been an amazing year for me and our church!!  I spent this morning just reflecting and thanking God for His faithfulness and blessings ... but also getting excited to know that He wants to do MORE than we can ask for or imagine!! (Ephesians 3:20-21)!!

  • We were blessed to celebrate more baptisms this year any other in our history!

  • God caused our church to grow faster this year and we were named one of the Top 100 Fastest Growing Churches in America by Outreach Magazine (check out the list here).

  • We began construction on our Next Step campus expansion at our Dalton campus.  The highlight was opening Stage 123 as a second worship venue, community space, and student ministry space.

  • God brought some amazing new staff members to our church.

  • We celebrated one year of being a multi-site church at our Calhoun Campus.

  • We've identified some areas where we need to improve: church-wide communications, growing our small groups, and developing leaders in our church.

  • I've learned a lot about myself as a leader and where I need to grow to better serve our church and our staff.

  • I've learned to rest more in God's sovereignty and promises.  Many times I know exactly how the man felt in Mark 9:24 when he cried, "I do believe! Help my unbelief!!"

  • Our staff and Elders continually amaze me with their dedication, wisdom, and leadership.  We are blessed to be led by this group of people. 

  • I took a longer summer break this year and it was good for me, my marriage, and our church as a whole.  I'm a better leader, preacher, husband, friend, and child of God when I "rest" and get away.

  • Thought our creative team (worship + tech) did a great job with our message series this year ...

  • The Forged message series was a great series as we discussed how God works to "forge" our character to be like Christ.  Staging rocked for this one!

  • I think the Boot Camp series covered one of the greatest needs in Christianity today -- how to study your Bible on your own and fuel your spiritual growth.

  • For me the Prime Time was really powerful to preach because all we did for several weeks was share the truths of the Gospel message of Jesus Christ ... GOOD NEWS!!

  • Lots of great feedback from the Committed series on marriage.

  • Hostage series was all about freedom in Christ ... what He died to give us!!

  • Two very practical series this Fall:  Dirty Jobs and Temptation.


Let me close this yearly "rundown" by simply thanking the wonderful people of Rock Bridge!! We are part (albeit small part) of a movement of God.  Thank you for coming, serving, praying, and bringing people to church with you!! Never underestimate what God wants to do through His church ... we cannot imagine it but we can be part of it!!  Our God is an awesome God!!!

Weekly Rundown (12.21.08)


  • Today we talked about Mary, focusing in on the incredible humility she had to possess in order to be "possessed" (literally) by God.  Mary is one of my favorite people in all Scripture. 

  • Don't forget our Christmas Eve services on Wednesday: Calhoun @ 5:00 pm in the Civic Auditorium; Dalton @ either 4:30 or 5:45 pm in the Wink!

  • Ate my first Christmas meal on Saturday night with some of Beth's family.  It was awesome while I was eating but not after I was finished ... kind of like sin isn't it? Feels good for a short while and then ... "Oh my gosh, what have I done?"

  • We had an amazing Elders meeting this past week!! The wisdom and faith of those men are amazing.  Rock Bridge, we are blessed to be guided and guarded by our Elders!!  In this meeting we really talked and prayed about where we believe our church can go and what it will take to get there.  For one thing, it will take us all seeking God like crazy to make us like His Son, use us to reach unchurched people, and to make Jesus famous in NW Georgia!!

  • Navy lost their bowl game to Wake Forest ... but a great season regardless for the middies.

  • Beth and I will be doing some snow skiing this week up at Sugar Mountain, NC. 

  • We've started working on our message series for the new year.  It's going to be called, "WOVEN", ... we're going to look at how God 'weaves' Himself in and through everything that happens to us, asking the question, "What if we looked for the thread of God in all our relationships, circumstances, and life events?"  I think it is going to be a powerful series!  Be praying NOW and start asking unchurched friends NOW to join you at church in 2009!!

Things We Like to Hear

A good way to "check the pulse" and see if our vision is being pursued is to listen to what people are saying.  Here's some things we like to hear around Rock Bridge:

  • I never thought I'd see _______ in church!

  • I want to serve.

  • I am reading my Bible more on my own.

  • When I go to college, I've got to find a church!

  • We now talk about church outside of church.

  • Christ is now part of our marriage.

  • I brought a friend to church.

  • I know what it means to have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

  • My child "wakes me up" to get ready for church.

  • It's all about Him!!!!!

Step Together

This Sunday (Dec. 14th) is our Step Together Offering to mark the one-year point of our giving campaign.  I can hardly believe it was one year ago that we took the step to give (over a three-year period) gifts of faith, sacrifice, and generosity to fund the vision God has given this church!!

Our goal has been to transform the buildings God has given us into worship and ministry centers that will be used to preach His Word, worship Him as Lord, disciple & equip people to serve Him, and extend our "reach" into our community.  We believe the Lord has sent and will continue to send people to Rock Bridge to meet Him, grow in Him, and bring glory to Him through their lives. Renovating, retrofitting, and building these buildings provide more capacity for people to connect to Christ and His community.  So on Sunday we simply want to unite our pledge giving and step together into Year Two of the project with unity and a renewed commitment to the God-given vision for Rock Bridge (click here for more details). 

Only in the past few years has God really taught me about sacrificially giving to His causes.  I want to share a few things Beth & I have personally learned:

1) Giving is hard (if not impossible) when motivated by fear, guilt, or obligation; giving is easy when motivated by BIG ideas and BOLD visions.  The church has the BIGGEST, BOLDEST, & BEST vision ever birthed and yet too often uses fear & guilt to motivate people.  Here's Rock Bridge's big and bold vision:  as long as anyone in our "area of influence" does not have a church home or personal & growing relationship with Christ then our mission is not finished.  This means the best is yet to come, God is just getting started, and giving to His causes is a safe and rewarding investment (not an expense) in eternity. That motivates me!!!

2) We cannot outgive God.  God led us a few years ago to give our entire savings to Him when Rock Bridge purchased the Wink.  I won't go into details, but trust me, you cannot outgive God!

3) Giving to something bigger than myself makes me feel good about myself.  I know this sounds a little weird but it is true.  I think we are all wired to want to be part of something special, unique, and big (look at how much $$ was given to the presidential campaigns this year).  Based on the authority of God's Word, nothing is bigger than Jesus Christ and His church (Colossians 1:15-18).

4) Giving honors God because it clearly demonstrates I trust God.  The more I grow as a Christ-follower, the more I simply want to honor God period.

So this Sunday Beth & I will be excited and honored to continue our participation in The Next Step campaign by "stepping together" with our fellow Rock Bridgers to further God's vision!!  And this coming year, Beth & I will be expectant as we watch what God does through a church committed to staying in step with Him!!

Weekly Rundown (12.07.08)


  • Go Navy!!  Seven straight wins over Army ... although I did like the Black Knight's new uniforms.

  • Great Sunday at all our venues and campuses today!!

  • I'm leading a breakout session at an upcoming conference in February on how a church can make a big impact in a small town (most new churches start in or around major metro. areas; Rock Bridge is somewhat unique in that regard).  Please pray for me and I'd love to here any thoughts you might have on that subject. {BTW, this is an excellent conference on planting and leading Kingdom-minded churches!!}

  • I am thinking about shaking up my weekly routine to give me better time in prayer, study, and preparation.  Sometimes I think "new" things and "new" routines help us push through the limits of familiarity, complacency, and "plateauing." -- I'll let you know in a few weeks. 

  • We meet this week to think through our messages for 2009 ... I'm excited about some of the topics and Bible passages that God is focusing us on for next year.

  • As a staff we are really thinking through how we communicate both as a staff and as a church.  I personally think we have lots of room for improvement in this area.  One of the things I learned from observing this year's presidential election was how disciplined, focused, and "on message" the Obama Team was day in and day out.  His campaign used every piece of technology they could to keep people informed, inspired, and in sync.

  • Beth and I MUST start our Christmas shopping this week!!

Best Christmas Movies

Nothing like a good Christmas movie.  Here's some of my favorites:

Hon. Mention: Die Hard -- I know, I know ... but Bruce Willis tackling terrorists in a high-rise over the holidays is hard to beat it ... unless of course Jack Bauer did a 24 series on Christmas Eve!!

#5: Home Alone -- a childhood favorite and I can go for "stupid-funny" movies.  This one is just fun.

#4: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer/Frosty the Snowman --combination pick from my childhood.  It's wasn't Christmas without these two holiday "clay" animations.

#3: A Charlie Brown Christmas -- Charlie Brown can help anyone get the Christmas cheer!

#2: Christmas Vacation -- my favorite in the National Lampoon series and possibly one of the funniest movies ever.  Nothing like Clark W. Grizwold and Cousin Eddie to get us laughing into the Christmas spirit!!

#1: A Christmas Story -- mine and Beth's personal favorite.  We are forever indebted to the folks at TBS for the 24-hour marathon showings of this classic.  From "triple dog dares" to the "queen mother of all bad words" this one has some of the best lines ever ... and it is pretty insightful about family dynamics.

Small Groups Pastor

Our search for a Pastor of Small Groups and Discipleship is going good.  Our search team of 3 staff members and 3 elders has narrowed the list down from 133 candidates to 10 at this point.  Lots of prayer needed for wisdom and discernment.

I really have been CONVICTED lately that as a church we must strengthen our ability to connect people relationally into small groups and help them grow spiritually through these groups.  This connection process is happening now but we need to take it to another level to more effectively fulfill the Bible's mandate on us to make disciples and "feed the sheep" entrusted to our care.  As a leader, I have struggled with how to do this until I read Paul's letters to a young pastor (I & II Timothy).  In II Timothy 2:2 Paul says to establish reliable teachers (plural).  He was telling Pastor Timothy that his church needed leader-teachers to effectively lead, grow, and shepherd the church.  The pattern was Paul (apostle) to Timothy (pastor) to other leader-teachers established in the local church.  Isn't this the pattern:  from God (through His Word & Spirit) to the Pastor to small group leaders?  However, as I looked at our church, I realized we were not structured as a staff and church body to do this beyond about 1000 people. 

This is when I became CONVINCED that we needed a Groups Pastor to live, breath fire, eat, sleep, and champion small groups, spiritual growth, and leader-teacher development in our church.  Several Elders were already feeling the same way ... that our small group growth has not kept up with our overall church growth and that producing church goers and achieving church growth is not the end goal -- developing followers of Christ who bring glory to God is!! (John 15:8).

Weekly Rundown (12.1.08)


  • Had a great Thanksgiving ... "had to" eat twice in 2 hours ... somebody had to :)

  • Unfortunately, I was right about the 'Dawgs and Tech.  Because Paul Johnson turned Navy's program around, I have a lot of respect for him and the way he coaches.

  • Army-Navy game is next weekend!!!

  • God rocked me this morning with Philippians 3:7-8.

  • Seeing our Host Team outside yesterday in the rain, offering umbrellas, smiling, and greeting people as they came to church pumped me up!!  I Peter 4:9 comes to mind:  "Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling" .

  • The Christmas musical is THIS WEEKEND: Friday & Saturday night @ 7:30 pm and Sunday @ 3:00 pm.  This always gets me in the Christmas spirit!!

  • First Wednesday is this week at both campuses.

  • Beth & I are going to be taking a couple of short "get aways" over Christmas ... and I can't wait.  We started taking short trips about 2 years ago and it is a great way for us to recharge and reconnect.  Relaxing at home is great but email and cell phones and work are always right by our sides.  I also use this time to clear my mind and really pray for God's guidance and direction. 

  • I've got to start my Christmas shopping!

Weekly Rundown (11.23.08)


  • Great day today at RBCC!!  I didn't know how people would react to our series on Temptation but it is really hitting home!! 

  • Special thanks to Sam Smith who preached today in Calhoun!!

  • Carll is hanging out over at NewSpring learning about their multi-site strategy and about how they do financial ministry. 

  • I caught a cold in Dallas ... ugh!

  • My dog, Bear, has been at the vet since last Thursday! He ate the fuzzy part of my Croc and it clogged him big time.  He pooped blood, had to get an IV, but should come home this week.  We miss him!

  • Our search for a small groups pastor is rocking.  God has blessed us with some amazing candidates (>130 resumes) and I am pumped about how important this is for our church!!  So many God things happen in small group community and I can't wait for this area of Rock Bridge to go to the next level!!

  • The Falcons are doing great!!

  • Georgia -- Georgia Tech this week ... in a weird way I hope UGA loses because I think they need to make some changes and a "win" may give them an excuse not to course correct.  (I can't believe I just typed that!!)

  • Beth and I are pumped about our Christmas plans!! 

  • Thanksgiving this week: I get to eat TWICE :)

  • HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

The Big "D"

My trip to Dallas, TX was once again incredible!!  What God is doing in churches from Michigan to Kentucky to Nevada to Utah is absolutely amazing.  This is a God-ripe time to be alive!!  Here's a couple of highlights:

  • Economic Crisis: This got a lot of mileage because of the current trouble in our economy.  But Christianity always shines brightest in crisis.  Here's an encouraging reality: President-elect Obama raised more money than any presidential candidate ever, including $150 million in October.  People will give to causes they believe in and to big vision.  What cause is greater and what vision is grander than what God is doing to redeem His creation?

  • Multi-Site: The opportunities for multi-site church are something more and more churches are seizing and seeing God-sized results.

  • Leadership & Structure: The thoughts on leadership were so amazing and insightful.  Everything from developing future leaders to church communications grabbed my attention.


Here's the bottom line for me Rock Bridge:

We are living in a time of great opportunity for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  In Esther this was called "for such a time as this." This time requires us to be motivated by God's heart, led by His Spirit, and steadfast to His Word.  We cannot allow our fears, selfish preferences, or lack of faith to drown out the call of God upon our lives.  God has promised to "build His church" and we must take Him at His Word  by being faithful to His commands to love, serve, go, shepherd, disciple, pray, bear fruit, and bring the Father glory.  May our hearts be ripe with expectancy over what God desires to do when His people move with Him!!

Weekly Rundown (11.18.08)


  • I'm just mad at Georgia!! Too much talent to play that poorly ... but a win is a win.

  • I'm heading to Dallas, TX this week.  Looking forward to hanging out with an amazing group of pastors and learning.  I need these opportunities to grow as a leader.  Be back Friday!

  • I went to Sunday Night Live (our Student Ministry on Sunday nights) ... it was really awesome.  The worship was cool and I heard our teens worshipping God.  Beth's message on putting "others first" rocked my heart.  Good stuff.

  • It's finally turned cold!!

  • Lots of good "vision" stuff coming from Carll and his team in Calhoun.  I'm pumped about taking things in our multi-site strategy to the next level!!

  • Stage 123 is packed at 11:00 am!!  Video venue rocks!!  Jeremy is doing a fantastic job leading that service.

  • Football Friday is over for the year.

  • My workouts have been tough lately ... soreness has invaded my body.  My legs hate me right now and my chest will tomorrow ... but I'll be in Dallas :)

  • One of our Elders is learning how to "hand glide" ... I love it!!

  • We received over 130 resumes for our Small Groups/Discipleship Pastor position!! Lots of hard work ahead to find the right person for our church ... please pray about this!!

  • This Temptation series is intensely practical but so important to learn how to resist.

  • For the Dalton campus: don't forget to bring gloves & socks Sunday for the local medical mission!! 

  • I'm out! 

Happy Anniversary!!

So today is mine and Beth's seven year anniversary!!  I can't believe it! It seems like yesterday we were on Good Morning America kissing (true story) after my ship returned from combat operations related to September 11th!!  The past seven years have been the richest of my life and simply would not have been had it not been for my wife.  Her faith, passion, love for Jesus, and wise discernment have blessed me so much. Beth is my teammate, shipmate, and soulmate ... not only in marriage but in ministry as well.  God has given us the rare and unique privilege of starting a church together and also serving in it together. 

Our connection actually began in high school when we taught a Sunday School class together and later went to a dance where we didn't dance ... we talked about church!!!  Both of us are self-confessing "church nerds" and we have always prayed that our marriage would be used by God to grow His kingdom.  It's not always easy because ministry and marriage are both tough at times ... but they are both eternally worth it. 

I know my best days as a husband are when Beth sees Jesus in me.  I pray that those days increase just as John the Baptist said in John 3:30.  I'm blessed to be able to see Jesus in my wife more days than not.  I see Jesus when ...

  • She encourages me to preach God's Word without apology and lead God's church without compromising the vision He gave us in January 2002.

  • She teaches our students ... she teaches as "one who has authority." (Matthew 7:29)

  • She loves me enough to tell me I'm wrong or that I need to rethink a decision I am pondering.

  • She insists on quality time and having "date day" every week (You protect what you value!)

  • She cries out in prayer for people to get the truths of God's Word and to meet Jesus.

  • She asks me to be her "covering" ... to protect her heart and her walk with God.

  • She says she can tell that I've been working out :)

The Rundown (11.9.08)


  • Several salvations today!!! (That never gets old!!!)

  • Great Elders meeting this afternoon ... so much wisdom and encouragement from those leaders in our church.  I'm blessed to be serving with them!

  • We received over 100 resumes (so far) for the Small groups pastor position!

  • New series this week:  TEMPTATION!!

  • The 'Dawgs have me worried ... defense wins championships and big games ... where is ours???

  • I have post-election 'blues' ... not because of who won but because I really enjoyed following the races.  There is still a Senate race in GA though :)

  • Beth & I have resumed biking since the doctor cleared her to exercise after sinus surgery.  We love it! The River Park in Chattanooga is incredible and so beautiful!! 

  • The Fall is probably my favorite season.

  • I'm ready for a good movie to come out soon.

  • I am ready for bed like at 6:00 pm since the time change ... it's crazy.

  • I can't believe Christmas is less than 2 months away!!

God & Country (Part 3)

As I wrap up these "God & Country" posts, I want to comment on an issue where I believe the Judeo-Christian voice and biblical world view needs to be clearly heard and considered: 

ABORTION:  Abortion is a modern-day plague that simply cannot be overlooked.  Not only are millions of babies helplessly killed each year but millions of would-be mothers are emotionally and mentally scarred by the practice. 


 


We in the church must not just be against abortion, we must be for life.  I dare say that few who undergo an abortion do so joyfully or without remorse; however, for whatever reason they see no alternative than to use their "choice" to end their unborn baby's life.  As a result ending abortion must include more than the pursuit of legal action to overturn Roe v. Wade (Roe is a wrongly decided case that is an overreach of the federal government and an abdication of legal protection for those who cannot protect themselves).  We must also champion life ...





  • By clearly teaching the biblical value and the constitutional protection of life;


  • By supporting potential mothers with love and care, especially those in crisis situations;


  • By offering hope, love, and grace to those who have undergone an abortion;


  • By seeking to end the poverty that makes abortion seem like the only option;


  • By promoting adoption;


  • By teaching abstinence in public schools (Life is a public issue with public ramifications!)


  • By strengthening marriage and families.


{On a side note, good examples of many of these efforts are the Women's Enrichment Center in Dalton and the Crisis Pregnancy Center in Calhoun.}


 


While this is my last "God & Country" post (for now), I believe the Judeo-Christian world view needs to be clearly and creatively expressed on several other issues, including: strengthening marriage and families; stewarding the environment; promoting an ethos of work, individual responsibility, and personal service; fighting injustices; properly recognizing the role of God in American history; and increasing faith-based initiatives and public-private partnerships to solve problems.

God & Country (Part 2)

 In the last post, I ended by stating that we have certain clear responsibilities as citizens.  I want to elaborate further on those responsibilities:


 


1) We have a biblical mandate to support and pray for our leaders.


Paul is very emphatic in I Timothy 2:1-2 that we are to pray for our government leaders. Keep in mind that Paul's government at the time was very anti-Christian and eventually would execute him.  President-elect Obama deserves our respect and needs our prayers.  Additionally, the election of an African-American to the presidency is something that needs to be celebrated for its historical significance as our nation seeks to move past a history scarred with racism and inequality.


 


2) Religous and Christian values need to be properly promoted.


The Bible tells us to be ready to tell anyone for the hope that we have but to share this hope with gentleness and respect.  Unfortunately, many time Christians can come across as defensive, judgemental, and critical.  We must remember that while what we say matters, how we say it is essential to being understood. This is essential to us being "salt and light" and a "shining city set on a hill"  because the Judeo-Christian world view is a needed voice in today's public discourse.  The sharing of this world view cannot be limited to what we are against but must include what we are for ... recognizing that what we are for offers hope and real solutions to today's problems.

God & Country (Part 1)

If I had to describe myself in 10 words or less, I would use the phrase "God and country."  I love Jesus Christ for WHO He is and WHAT He did.  I also love the United States of America and all that this country stands for -- freedom, opportunity, hope, and possibility.  I love politics for the simple reason that I love America.  I also believe that as a Christian we have a right and a responsibility to be engaged in the the direction and vision of our country.  I do not subscribe to the unwritten, unconstitutional, and unbiblical belief that religion should not mix with politics and that the sacred and secular should be separated.  In this next series of posts, I'll explain why.


 


We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights …” – so begins the most important paragraph penned about our nation.  The principles contained in these famous words have guided and inspired our government, communities, soldiers, and citizens for generations.  Behind these principles lies the power that has allowed America to endure dark and tumultuous hours and yet consistently shine as a beacon of hope and opportunity.


 


The power behind America’s endurance and success comes directly from our Creator.  Our founding fathers derived a vision for mankind’s existence, America’s independence, and government’s purpose from the Almighty Himself.  The quest for religious liberty lured Christian settlers to come to America.  During the dramatic days of our nation’s birth religious expression dominated the political landscape, shaped our new nation’s philosophy, and inspired us to fight a war with the reigning superpower.  The proposition of the founders was simple: God had given certain “unalienable” rights to everyone and no man or government could ever take them away.  Chief among those rights was that God created us to live with freedom, dignity, and equality.


 


The recognition of this link between God and our freedom is central not only to our nation’s birth but also to our nation’s continued prosperity.  The founders wisely realized that the stronger this link, the stronger our nation.  President George Washington maintained in his Farewell Address that religion and morality are “indispensable supports” to life in America.  We too must realize that if the link between liberty and God is weakened or severed, then the great power behind America’s enduring success will be endangered.


 


This is why we as a nation founded by faith principles and comprised of vast communities of faith must continually renew our commitment to reliance upon our Creator, not only for individual spiritual freedom but also for political and national freedom.  God’s hand in our personal and national histories is always a cause for awe and thanksgiving.  But it cannot be taken for granted or allowed to be forgotten.  God-given gifts, like freedom, bring God-expected responsibilities.

Deep Thought

I read this quote by John Piper the other day.  Absolutely spot on but challenging:

God created us to live with a single passion: to joyfully display His supreme excellence in all the spheres of life.  The wasted life is the life without this passion.  God calls us to pray and think and dream and plan and work not to be made much of, but to make much of Him in every part of our lives.  [Our challenge] is to live and die boasting in the Cross of Christ and making the glory of God [our] singular passion. 

WOW!!

Heavenly Father,
Increase our passion and affections for You!!  May we display Your glory in every part of our lives!

Staffing for the Future

Our Senior Leadership Team (staff + some of our Elders) have had some great conversations about staffing our church for growth.  Since Aaron moved to Acworth to start ministry at Eagle Point Church, we have not had an associate pastor and several staff have had to focus on multiple roles.  We have used this time to pray and seek wisdom for staffing our church for our vision.

Now we are ready to move forward -- we're going to be changing a few roles and how our organizational chart "looks" but we are currently seeking a Pastor of Small Groups and Discipleship.  This position will also serve in an associate pastor type role, providing some leadership to the church as a whole.  I believe we have HUGE potential in this area to grow, build disciples, and create community in this church.

Alfred Turley is eventually going to move into the role of Executive Pastor (Here's a good description of what an Executive Pastor does).  He'll oversee the business and operational side of our church: finances, facilities, administration, along with leading, supervising, developing staff, office management, AND being another one who helps provide overall leadership and guidance to the church.  Alfred has been a tremendous blessing to our team since he joined us from Shaw Industries.  I'm blessed to serve God with him!!

As one of our Elders said last week, (my paraphrase) ... "We need to staff to create growth not in response to growth."  I think these future changes will better position us for where God is trying to lead us in the future.

Weekly Rundown (11.02.2008)


  • Great week this week (except for the fiasco in Jacksonville on Saturday)!!

  • Fall Festival was amazing here in Dalton and in Calhoun.  THANKS TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS!!!!

  • I got pretty passionate in today's message about some things :)

  • I'm really pumped about our new web site.

  • Starting to think hard about message series for 2009.

  • Several new small groups starting up at both our campuses ... this is a HUGE need for us to continually connect people into small groups for Bible study, fellowship, & prayer.  I'm pumped about the new facilitators and the people that will connect through groups! 

  • Great crowd today  (except for the UGA fans who were wearing black)!

  • I loved the time change = extra hour of sleep!!

  • Starting a new book by Larry Osborne called Sticky Church.  So far it is awesome!!

  • Our staff continues to amaze me.  They pour their lives into God's work with such passion, talent, and skill.  Their commitment to Christ and His church is inspiring.

  • Be sure and VOTE ON TUESDAY!

  • I have one word for today:  THANKFUL!!!

Weekly Rundown (10.20.08)


  • Kicked off Dirty Jobs message series yesterday.  Good video work and I think this is going to be a very practical series for us.

  • We're hosting a construction conference for CoGun on Tuesday this week in Stage 123.  This company has been amazing to work with on our campus expansion project.  The keynote speaker is Dave Ferguson who is mega-church pastor in Chicago and multi-site guru. Can't wait to spend some time with him.

  • I'm really praying for more discipline and self-control in my life, especially when it comes to my time with God.  I've tried to balance working out and time with God all in the morning and it is tough.  I'm either getting to bed too late or something.  But I've decided to give God the top priority in the morning.  I'm a morning person and at my best then (after a shower of course).  I just can't keep neglecting or short changing this ... it's too important for my walk with God.

  • The Dawgs got a win vs. Vandy. But they have to raise their level of play the next 2 weeks or it could be ugly.

  • Fall Festival is in <2 weeks: Oct. 29th (Dalton) & Nov. 1st (Calhoun).

  • I'm heading back to Dallas, TX in November.  I'm ready.  I need a good dose of wisdom & encouragement from some amazing pastors and church leaders.

  • I'm loving this Fall weather!

  • Here's a question that God is stretching me with:  Do we really know the full power of prayer?

  • Our new web site is up!!  (still www.rockbridge.cc) We've got some more stuff to add but the basic layout looks great!

God & the Economy (part 2)

As a follow-up to yesterday's post, here are some basic principles (from Andy Stanley) to follow to begin investing eternally and following God financially:

PRIORITY GIVING.  This means begin giving back to God first.  Don't give God the left overs.  The first check after you get paid should be to God.  Give to God right away as a priority giver.  He owns it all and asks that we put Him first in everything.  This habit builds recognition into your life that God is indeed the owner, and it puts more discipline into your financial choices.

PERCENTAGE GIVING.  This means giving back to God a percentage of our income.  The Bible teaches a practice called "tithing" which equals 10%.  In other words, for every $10 you make, you give God back $1.  That's a pretty good deal since He owns it all anyway! So what happens if you simply cannot give 10% because of too much debt, bad choices, job cut backs, etc.? First, see what adjustments you can make in your budget, and then pick a percentage and start giving that with the goal of getting to 10% or greater.  For example,  start with 2% for a few months and then jump to 3% ... 7% ... until you get to an actual 'tithe.'  Picking a % to give builds order and discipline into your budget and financial life.  It's a simple an easy step.  God will walk with you as you step with Him toward a life of full obedience.

PROMPTED GIVING.  The Bible is full of examples when individuals, churches, and in some cases cities & nations were prompted to give above and beyond the tithe to God's causes.  The Tent of Meeting (Moses) and Solomon's Temple were all built by giving prompted by God's Holy Spirit working through God's people.  Sometimes you'll hear of a specific need and God will simply "prompt" you to give.  Our Next Step campaign is an example of prompted giving, where our church responded to God's call to expand our campus for His ministry purposes.  The key is to be open and willing to respond whenever God prompts you.

God & the Economy

Ever since we held the financial seminars last week, I've been thinking a lot about what God's economic policy might look like. 

God is all about stewardship while the world promotes ownership.  Understanding the fact that God owns everything (yes, everything) is fundamental to understanding how God views money.  Once you accept this truth, the next steps are easy.  When the stock market drops, taxes are raised, or someone dies we get reminded that we really don't own anything and can't take anything with us.

God views everything from an eternal perspective not a temporary one.  The world is fixated with economic cycles, bull and bear markets, growth and cut backs.  God sees everything from the lens of eternity.  Money is simply a tool to use ... either for eternal or temporary purposes.

God has an investment strategy that is eternally safe.  Investing is a generally a good thing but as millions of Americans learned, investments are never 100% safe.  However, investing eternally by living generously, giving sacrificially, and tithing is the only sure investment there is.  Why? Because God promises He will reward "kingdom" investments!!  These investments are 100% safe & guaranteed by the holy character of God.  These investments yield amazing returns because you simply cannot outgive God.  Yes, we may have to wait until heaven to enjoy the returns ... but think about it -- would you rather enjoy the return for a few decades perhaps or for all of eternity?!?

Weekly Rundown (9.12.08)


  • Took almost 2 weeks off from blogging ... so I want to get things started again with a big: HOW 'BOUT THEM DAWGS!

  • Carll and I finished out our Hostage series today.  I really enjoyed preaching this series and believe God has and will continue to use it in people's lives.

  • The financial seminar last week at both our campuses was great! Chris Simuro did a wonderful job teaching sound financial principles and explaining our nation/world's current crisis.

  • My parents went to Hawaii!!  (I went while in the Navy ... so beautiful and Pearl Harbor is a must for every American.)

  • We start a new series next week called Dirty Jobs ... don't miss it and invite a friend.

  • I watched the Saturday Night Live special parody on the debate this week ... hysterical!

  • For some strange reason I ran twice in one day.  One 25-minute run and then a 20-minute run in the evening.  What was I thinking?!?  My body has been asking my brain that all day!!

  • Got to give a shout out to all our Host Team folks in Dalton & Calhoun.  You make so many people feel so welcome and it makes a huge difference in people's worship experience.

  • A two-hour 24 special is coming out in November ... Jack is back!!

Weekly Rundown (9.28.08)


  • Beth had sinus surgery this week.  She's doing a lot better ... and I think I've done a decent job taking care of her. Thanks for all the prayers, concern ... and food :)

  • Stage 123 continues to show strong numbers each week.  I'm pumped about the opportunity we now have as a church to continue reaching people for Christ!

  • Rock Bridge was named one of the Top 100 Fastest Growing Churches in America in '08.  (We were #46.)  Pretty amazing what God is doing!!  Because numbers for numbers sake, mean little.  But if the numbers describe life change, salvations, people getting passionate about Christ -- only then the numbers mean something.

  • Confession: my prayer life has been weak this week ... and I can tell.  (God always reminds me that apart from Him I can do nothing.)

  • Some amazing "God" stories going on in Calhoun this week!! 

  • The 'Dawgs simply got whipped Saturday night.  Season is still young and it's the reality of being in the SEC.

  • Navy beat Wake Forest!!

  • First Wednesday is this week!!

  • Spending some time thinking through how we can work to meet some needs in our community: homelessness, recovery efforts, etc. 

  • Tomorrow is our monthly all-staff meeting.  We have fun, eat, celebrate, look over the calendar, and I do a leadership & vision chat with everyone.

Values -- part 4

Volunteer-driven ... everyone needs the opportunity to invest in eternity.

Our staff got very passionate and excited about this value and understandably so.  The Bible teaches in Ephesians 4 that the job of a church staff is to "prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up."  (see Ephesians 4:11-13).   In other words, the staff's job is to help people in the church serve Christ with their gifts and according to their passions.  One of the great joys of our staff is to equip and empower volunteers to invest in eternity by serving.  This values explains why ...

  • We offer environments like Inquirer's Lunch and GroupLink as simple ways to learn how to connect and serve at Rock Bridge.

  • We are constantly investing in volunteers to encourage and support them in serving Christ.

  • We evaluate our staff members in part on how well they build and lead volunteer teams.

  • We have broken with the old southern tradition that church membership means "my name is on the roll."  We teach that membership means "I am involved in what God is doing through my church."

  • We want teenagers to begin serving as students so we have student band, praise team, children's volunteers, and other serving opportunities.

  • We have a relatively small staff for a church our size.  This keeps us focused on building up volunteer and ministry teams (Ephesians 4), instead of hiring staff.

  • We involve volunteers in virtually every church decision.  Through our ministry teams, Elders, and other teams we ask our volunteers to help make wise decisions.

Facilities Position

As our church facilities have grown, so has the time and effort it takes to maintain them and keep them ready for the various ministries they support.  Additionally, most of our buildings are older and require more frequent maintenance.  Therefore, we are considering hiring a facilities manager/maintenance person at Rock Bridge.  This person would be responsible for doing basic maintenance & repair work, working with vendors & contractors, ensuring facilities are properly set-up for various ministries, and maintaining overall campus safety & security.

RELEVANT ... to where you are in life.

Our staff really came together on this discussion point saying that this value is a strength of our church.  I know for me personally, teaching God's Word with a focus on application and being practical is very important.  This core values explains why ...

  • We use visuals to teach and sometimes even hand out "reminders" to help people think about message points during the week (we've passed out dominos, match boxes, refridgerator magnets).

  • We create age-appropriate environments for students and children.

  • We focus our teaching to adults, students, and children on a limited number of points and topics, believing that less is more ... more understanding, more retention, more application, and more relevance.

  • We use small group questions and studies that focus on helping people apply God's Word to their lives.

ENGAGING ... a "come & see" experience

We wrestled long and hard on this value which describes the type of ministry environments and experiences we program at Rock Bridge.  We used words like creative, dynamic, powerful, irresistible ... but finally reached consensus with "engaging".  Church and boring, the Bible and boring -- should never be used in the same sentence.   This value is why ...

  • We put a high emphasis on technology, creativity, energy, passion and excellence in programming our environments.

  • We believe in age-appropriate ministry.  (It's hard for a 2nd grader to be "engaged" in adult worship)

  • We're not afraid to use "secular" songs or other appropriate things from pop culture to help engage people in order to point them to Jesus Christ.

  • We provide note taking space in our bulletins and put Scripture and song lyrics on our 'big" screens.

Core Values -- part 1

Our staff spent about 4 weeks working together to nail a few of the key things that we value.  These things form a grid for how we make decisions, do ministry, and create environments.  We came up with four things that really drive us.

VALUE:  ACCEPTANCE ... because everyone matters.

Over and over the theme of accepting people came up in our discussions.  We want anyone and everyone who walks through our doors and experiences Rock Bridge ministry to feel accepted, not condemned or judged.  This does not mean we ignore sin and its consequences and the need for life change; however, it does mean that everyone matters to God and should matter to us as well. This core value explains why ...

  • We place a high value on Host Team (greeters, ushers, cafe workers) and why we want people greeted and welcomed numerous times before they reach their seat.

  • We don't have "dress codes".

  • We don't have a lot of "insider" talk.

  • We balance talking about the reality and severity of sin with the hope of God's grace and love. (Get these two out of alignment and problems develop real quick.)

Weekly Rundown (9.21.08)


  • Great work retreat with our staff this past Tuesday.  Lots accomplished.  Lots of plans made ... now we have to execute!!

  • So today it happened ... we had trouble with our video feed into Stage 123 during the first service.  I thought it would happen eventually.  The disappointing part is that it was preventable and I hate preventable problems.  I take full responsibility for it and apologize for the trouble but we did learn some valuable lessons.

  • Great worship sets today ... powerful stuff!!

  • Rock Bridge Calhoun celebrated one year today with a great crowd and great fellowship time afterwards.  One year of being one church in two locations ... amazing stuff!

  • Some talk amongst our folks about the online forum that is on the local newspaper's web site.  There is a "Rock Bridge" section full of criticisms and other weird, unfounded truths ... there are some pretty good responses though.  Nehemiah probably offers the best response to unfounded criticisms here

  • Dawgs looked pretty good last night.  Big test next week against 'Bama. I'm worried about our line of scrimmage.

  • Navy beat Rutgers!!

  • I'm really enjoyed preaching this Hostage series.  Next week we tackle a subject that we've NEVER dealt with before.  It could get tense, it will be challenging, but it will be liberating!!

  • Thinking about calling an audible with our preaching calendar and either extending Hostage to 6 weeks or doing a stand alone message on a topic I feel we need to cover.  We'll work on it with our creative/worship teams this week.

  • I'm finally back to working out with regularity again ... and I just feel better all over -- emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.  Don't know why but God really speaks to me when I'm running.  Pretty cool. Beth letting me move my weight set upstairs into a room with heat & air & tv rocks :)

  • I'm going to do a series of posts this week on the 4 core values that drive our church staff and the ministries we do at Rock Bridge.  We worked on these as a staff team for about 4 weeks -- good stuff!

  • They laid the foundations for the new ministry center this week.  Should start going vertical soon!!

Weekly Rundown (9.14.08)


  • The local church is the hope of the world! (That statement still rocks my world.)

  • More spiritual warfare on me this week than anytime I can remember (I'll be teaching a little on this subject this weekend ... I guess I needed some personal experience).

  • Week 2 of being multi-site and multi-venue went well again.  Stage 123 continues to be an incredible environment on Sunday mornings and throughout the week.

  • Freeing up seats to allow for growth works.

  • Video venue can and does work.

  • Multi-site can and does work.

  • I keep catching our staff hanging out in the Stage's Cafe ... I catch them because I am hanging over there a lot myself :)

  • Baptism celebration tonight was awesome!!  The number of people who decided to get baptized DOUBLED in about a week.

  • I will NEVER get tired of looking into someone's eyes as they are about to baptized and seeing the passion that only comes from the the life-changing, life-giving power of Christ!!  AWESOME!!

  • Our staff does a great job empowering volunteers.  Here's a few examples: baptism food (we feed ~1000 people), set-up and clean-up is totally done by volunteers; Stage 123 and Wink cafes are totally run by volunteers; Stage 123 and Calhoun Host Teams are run by volunteers.  When the church works ... the church works (i.e. -- the church is the hope of the world!)

  • Great meeting this past Tuesday to set up a network of care in our church.  We have a team of 50+ people who will provide meals, make phone calls, do hospital visits, send cards, and collect care packages to minister to people in need.  (If you are interested, email carla@rockbridge.cc)

  • We are doing a staff 24-hour working retreat starting tomorrow night.  Can't wait to get some goals laid-out, systems refined, and BIG prayers prayed with our team!! Pray for us.

  • Lots of disappointed Dawg fans today at church ... hey a win in the SEC is a win!! One week at at time.

  • Sleeping late tomorrow!

The Church as a "Third Place"


  • What if church buildings were used more than 1 hour a week?

  • What if the church had the same draw as say a movie theatre, Starbucks, or local diner?

  • What if church wasn't just a place you attended but also a place where you could do life and in fact share life with other people?


As we began designing a downtown campus a few years ago with the help of some amazing builders, architects, and missional church consultants at CoGun, these were a few of the questions we were asking.  Cogun helped us think through several issues and proposed some great ideas.

One idea was to contact Michael Trent of ThirdPlace Consulting to help us design a cafe and develop a strategy for using it as part of the church's mission & vision.  Michael's innovative ideas and passion have been unbelievable.  He spent the latter part of last week and all weekend training our volunteers (who loved him!) and equipping us for success ... and the results have been amazing!  I love Michael's thoughts that "when people feel comfortable they stay; when they stay, they connect; when they connect, they form a relationship; with relationships come influence; and with influence, there is impact."

While we only have about 4 days of history, the 4 days have shown that the church can be a third place for people to hang out, share life, & do ministry (the 1st and 2nd places of life being home and work), and that a 3rd Place can increase a church's impact.  On Sunday morning the buzz and vibe coming from the cafe was incredible as people connected with each other.  On Sunday night we had dozens of students arrive 30 minutes early just to hang out in the cafe, playing video games, getting speciality coffee drinks and smoothies, and having fun.  On Tuesday morning a group of men met there to pray.  Later that morning dozens of middle schoolers arrived for breakfast, coffee, and a devotional.  On Tuesday night ~50 people met for dinner to organize our church's pastoral care team (by the way, this ministry is awesome!).  On Thursday morning high schoolers gathered for biscuits, lattes and prayer.  Later this month we'll feed the Northwest Football Team their pre-game meal and host the local Downtown Dalton Development Authority's annual meeting.

Seeing a building come alive and be used more than a couple of hours a week is not only good stewardship but it is strategic and missional.   But most importantly, seeing people do life, share experiences, and engage relationally around the context of Jesus Christ and His church is biblical and it's exciting!!

Initial Findings: Multi-Site & Multi-Venue

Okay, so after one week of being both a multi-site, multi-venue church, here's what we've learned:

  • Whenever you free up seats, you create growth potential ... and God is then able and more than willing to bring the growth.

  • The people of Rock Bridge get the vision of Rock Bridge.

  • Video is NOT an issue provided there is a good environment: hospitality, technology, and worship.

  • Change (to borrow a buzz word in the '08 Election) is exciting, energizing, and engaging to people ... provided it is change in the right direction, done in the right way and at the right time.


Some interesting numbers:

  • 4 out of 10 adults (42%) chose to attend either a multi-site campus or the Stage 123 video venue.

  • 1 out of 3 Dalton adults (37%) attended worship at Stage 123.

  • In Dalton, 1 out of 3 attenders chose the 9:30 am service (This % needs to increase!)

  • The Wink Theatre (original Dalton worship space) was 34% full at 9:30 am and 57% full at 11:00 am (= we have room to grow!!).

  • Overall, we had our highest total church attendance since Mother's Day.

Weekly Rundown (9.7.08)


  • Busy week but a great day as Rock Bridge turned six years old!!

  • The Stage 123 kick-off was great ... great coffee, great crowds, and great work by our tech folks and host team "baristas". {BTW, they serve a "peach" smoothie in the Cafe that is unbelievable!!}

  • We really need people to make the switch to the 9:30 service ... the 11:00 is close to full -- even after we opened Stage 123 ... more on this later :)

  • Great service in Calhoun today -- I was there last week "live" and the "vibe" is great at RBCC Calhoun!

  • During the service we showed a baptism of an 86-year old man who recently received Christ at RBCC and 2 of his grandchildren.  It was amazing to watch and pretty emotional ... but it represents what we are all about: new life in Christ!!

  • Student kick-off at Stage 123 went great today.  New cafe, video games, amazing worship, great message, and exciting small groups made it a great evening. 

  • Lots of things appear to be hitting on all cylinders right now -- which kind of scares me but reminds me that this is all a God-thing and we MUST stay connected to Him, get power from Him, and seek His purposes always.

  • The foundation work on the new Ministry Center (Dalton campus) has begun!!!

  • I have not watched as much college football this year ... yet. (I haven't even seen College Game Day on ESPN ... yet.)

  • We finished up annual evaluations on our staff this past week.  While these conversations are both challenging and encouraging, I think the accountability is very healthy.  Our staff is doing great things right now and I love serving God with this team!!

  • Tomorrow Beth & I are supposed to tackle a house project: moving my weight set and exercise equipment to a new room -- with heat & air!!

Weekly Rundown (8.31.08)


  • I preached live at our Calhoun Campus today ... GREAT TO BE THERE!

  • There is a great vibe, feel, or "buzz" in Calhoun ... welcoming spirit, hanging out in the lobby, good worship, excitement, etc.

  • I can't figure out holiday weekend attendance patterns to save my life: up or down?

  • Praying for fellow Americans on the Gulf coast as Gustav prepares to make landfall.

  • Went to Athens yesterday to see the 'Dawgs play ... I think everyone including the manager got to play.  Loads of young talent who played great.  I hope we drop in the rankings though ... that #1 thing is a big bullseye on our backs.

  • We open STAGE 123 in 7 days!!!!!!!!!!!! 

  • Prison Break starts back on Labor Day!!!!

  • Olympics followed by political conventions and the start of football season = I am not getting enough sleep.

  • I had lunch with 2 awesome business leaders in our community this week.  I went over some of the leadership challenges and opportunities in our church and God used both of these people to speak truth into my life.  I am reminded that all truth is God's truth and that we can learn from anybody.

  • I've been slacking with exercise lately and I feel it.

  • Please PRAY BIG & BOLD this week for Stage 123!!  We have a huge opportunity to reach more people for Christ, to create another incredible environment for people to experience God & His church at work, to minister more effectively to the next generation, and to better serve our community.

  • I love the adventure of following God!!

Tailgater!!

This Friday is one of the biggest local football games of the year:  Dalton vs. Calhoun, which effects our church as well (being one church in 2 locations: Dalton & Calhoun).  So we're pumped to have the opportunity to be part of a joint tailgater between the two Quarterback Clubs -- our very own Rock Bridge band will be playing during the pre-game festivities!!  Come on out and support your school, our young people, or just our church ... food, inflatables, and good music :)

Weekly Rundown (8.24.08)

Here's this week's recap:

  • Some great conversations and discussions in our staff meetings on Tuesday.  We're discussing the basic question of "What makes Rock Bridge Rock Bridge?"  Who are we to our community? What would happen if Rock Bridge did not exist?  Very valuable discussions for us!  I've been asking people who don't attend Rock Bridge these same questions and it is pretty interesting to hear what they have to say.

  • It's official --  Stage 123 opens Sunday, September 7th in Dalton!!!  (We'll also be in the Stage for First Wednesday in September.)

  • Construction on the new ministry center is set to begin real soon!!

  • The Olympics are now over ... back to normal sleep.

  • The next 2 weeks are great for a political junky like me.

  • Football on Friday and Saturday this week ... it's the most wonderful time of the year :)

  • Student Ministry is rockin' right now at both campuses.

  • Dalton Children Ministry is cramped for space as more and more children connect to Rock Bridge Kids ... Parents, thanks for your patience -- construction is underway!!  Also, to help our space problem, try coming at 9:30 am instead of 11:00 am.

  • We finished our Domino series today.  Overall, I felt this was a good series for us as we prepare for what I believe is going to be an amazing season for our church.

  • Had some church planters in our services today.  I am so excited about the movement of God to plant more churches here in America.  Just to keep up with the number of churches that close each year, we need to plant 3000+ churches a year.  Once you factor in population growth and the number of people who leave the church each year, the need to plant more churches or multi-sites is apparent.

  • Shane Craven is planting in Ringgold in early 2008.  Jeff Murphy is planting in Columbus, GA in January 2009.  Praying for these guys, their launch teams, and the people God is calling them to reach!!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why has Rock Bridge Dalton chosen to stay downtown and not go out and just buy land?

(This question is asked mostly by those who do not go to Rock Bridge.)

The short answer is God brought us downtown and kept us downtown. In 2002 when we were preparing to launch we looked at meeting everywhere but downtown (Trade Center, 7th Day Adventist Church, a funeral home, a school theater).  The door closed on each potential meeting site and with a little over a week until our 1st scheduled preview service, we had no place to meet.  The newly renovated Wink Theatre was set to reopen at about the same time and we saw an update on its renovation in the newspaper so we called the owner and went to meet with him.  He said, "I can think of nothing better to be in here [the Wink] on Sunday mornings than a church."  We agreed on a price, shook hands (no signed contract), and Rock Bridge started in the Wink Theatre.

When we were about 2 years old we starting looking for land and/or other options for long-term property.  We inquired about 2 pieces of property.  One in particular was the old Lowe's building in Dalton (near the Shaw Offices).  We visited the property, consulted with several people, and prayed because this building had enormous potential.  But after a lot of prayer and wise counsel our leadership all believed it was a "No" from God and that for the time being we should stay downtown.  Then in the Spring of 2004 the Wink owner said he was interested in selling to us if we were interested ... which we were.  However, we prayed all summer, held a church "town hall" meeting to see where our church stood, and not until a consensus was reached through prayer and a church wide vote (97% in favor) did we purchase the Wink.

So bottom line is we are downtown because a door opened to get us downtown, doors have shut to keep us downtown, and most importantly, our prayers have revealed that God wants us to be in downtown Dalton.

If I Had It To Do Over Again ... (part 2)

If I had to start RBCC over again, here are some things I would want to do again:

Be foolish enough to do it.  I think you have to be a little foolish to start a church and trust that God will build His church (Matthew 16:18).  I'm thankful that we were "unwise" which gave God plenty of room to work!  According to the wisdom of church planting, you should ...

  • Not meet in a space that will feel empty with 200 people in attendance.  We did ... in fact the Wink (lower level) was probably only a third full and we didn't use pipe and drape or close a single section and it felt empty ... except for I guess there was room for God to work!

  • Have a worship leader.  We didn't.  In fact, we only had a keyboard and electric drum set.

  • Have your technology nailed down.  We didn't.  We had a 10-year old 500 lumen projector with a bulb that had never been changed and we didn't have a replacement!  We projected onto a screen that looked like one we used when I was in 5th grade!

  • Have excellent children spaces.  We didn't.  We used the upstairs lobby for nursery and dismissed k-5th graders to the theatre's dressing rooms which had no heat, and required going down a 2.5 foot hallway!


It's funny but knowing what I know now ... would we still have started our church on September 8, 2002 ... ? I ask myself that a lot ... but I sure am glad we did!!

Stress student ministry.  Lots of theories on this one but Beth & I decided from Day 1 that we were going after teenagers like crazy.  Everyone says do a great children's ministry from the Day 1 if you want young families to show up and/or come back.  However, some say wait on student ministry until you have more resources and leaders.  We didn't wait and now when college students are over at my house on fire for Jesus because they "had Rock Bridge" in high school ... I'm so glad we did Student Ministry from Day 1.  AND students bring their parents to church because most parents get excited when their teenager is excited about Jesus and His church ... as opposed to some other alternatives :)

Renew and repeat the vision regularly.  Somehow we just keep repeating our vision with regularity so that no one was too confused about why we started Rock Bridge: >50,000 unchurched (as of 2002) in Whitfield County alone.  We do a yearly "Vision Sunday" that renews our passion for connecting people to Christ and His community.

Let others get in on it and give stuff away.  We attracted a number of Christians who were looking for a church to bring their unchurched friends to and to be passionate about serving.  We quickly got many of them involved in key leadership roles, ministry teams, etc.  For example, much of the business (finances, property issues) of our church has always been handled by some amazing people who are not on our staff.  God has people prepared to come alongside and build His church through His people.  It takes people to reach people.  God sent us some amazing people who very quickly bought into the vision of RBCC and we have set them loose to do ministry ... and they have attacked that 50,000 number!!

If I Had It To Do Over Again ... (part 1)

Sometimes I'll catch myself thinking about if I could go back 6 years and start Rock Bridge all over then what would I want to do differently and what would I do the same??  I'll take two posts to answer this question.  Today, I'll start with if I had it to do over again, I would do these things differently:

Learn the lesson that praying is more important than preparation.  (In fact, prayer IS preparation).  There is no substitute for prayer and I've found in my life that what I thought was prayer was not what God means by prayer.  God promises to build His church and He says it shall be a house of prayer; therefore, we better ask Him to "teach us how to pray" ... I wish I had asked this question earlier.

Hire staff quicker as a catalyst for growth rather than as a response to growth.  We waited too long to hire some critical staff positions and several of us almost crashed from burnout.  I wish we had staffed small groups and worship from Day 1.  Worship and community are near and dear to God's heart.  And you should staff what you value ... or rather what God values ... because it is His church

Hang out with other pastors more often ... the encouragement from a peer is needed!  Just in the past 2 years have I really begun to meet other pastors/church planters.  God has used some amazing people to really bless, encourage, and speak truth to me that has in turn helped me become a better Christian, leader, and pastor.  I hope I can do the same for others.

Don't lose focus when criticized.  Starting a church in our hometown did not necessarily guarantee a warm homecoming for Beth & I.  I notice a lot of church planters end up with defensive spirits and act like a cornered rattlesnake because of the amount of criticism received from other Christians/churches.  I have felt myself getting that way at times but in the end God will build His church and so we answer to Him.  We are only here by the grace of God and accroding to the plan of God ... when I leave it at that I sleep a whole lot better :)

Weekly Rundown (8.17.08)


  • Domino Part 3 today.  This is a challenging series (aka "stepping on toes") but I really believe God is preparing us as a church for some amazing things!

  • Jeremy Owens did a great job leading worship today in Dalton.  He'll be leading worship at Stage 123 when that venue opens in a few weeks.

  • We had two great kick-offs for our Calhoun & Dalton student ministry.  The student volunteers rock!!

  • Great lunch this week with Shane Craven.  Shane has pastored in Dalton before and is now starting a church in Ringgold.  I'm pumped to have Shane here in NW Georgia and believe God is going to do some awesome things.

  • GroupLink this week in Dalton and next month in Calhoun.

  • I'm really encouraged by how strong our giving has been lately given the poor local economy. 

  • We're planning a staff "working" retreat for mid-September.  God has really focused my prayers and thoughts on a few things that we need to work through together as a staff.

  • God has given me some really BIG things to pray for right now.

  • Georgia is #1 in the AP Poll ... we can enjoy it for 2 weeks :)

  • The Olympics are so inspiring to me.  Plus, I love America and get really fired up when we win ... but I pay for it in the morning!!

Dealing with Criticism

One area that God has been speaking to me about lately is how to deal with criticism.  I guess I was a little surprised at the amount of criticism you receive as a church planter and as a pastor ... and any criticism against our church is against me because I love this church, helped start this church, and believe so much in the potential of this church (this means when a staff member, ministry, music, etc is criticized, I take it personally ... I've tried not to but it's like when someone criticizes a family member or close friend.)  So here's what I've been learning about dealing with criticism:

Any and all criticism is an opportunity for me to check my spirit and combat pride.  I am tempted to silence criticism, get defensive, and quit listening.  However, that response can lead to or indicate a prideful spirit and I am VERY AFRAID of pride in me.  So I try to ask God to search my spirit, examine my motives, AND if the criticism is valid ... receive it and act on it. (And YES, criticism can be valid and there is usually a reason for all criticism.)

Criticism can be a sign that people care.  I sit in meetings all Tuesday morning reviewing what is happening in our church and planning ahead.  I listen to our staff and leaders speak openly and honestly and sometimes critically.  But these people care about Jesus Christ, Rock Bridge, and God's work here.  Criticism from people who care and understand the vision of Rock Bridge is incredibly important to hear, receive, and respond to appropriately.  Criticism in this way can indicate high levels of ownership.  (Perry Noble has a great post on dealing with "tension" in the room during a meeting.)

Criticism is an opportunity to cast vision.  Criticism may reflect a lack of understanding and a desire to understand.  For example, we strongly discourage parents from bringing children (5th grade and under) into our adult service.  Some have interpreted this to mean that we are against children which could not be farther from the truth.  We explained that we have an incredible children's ministry that is safe, secure, fun and Jesus-packed, that children distract others in the service (including the preacher who does not use notes very much and can forget what he is saying when distracted), and that a huge part of our vision is providing relevant, age-appropriate environments ... then usually their criticisms are replaced with understanding and a level of appreciation.  Any and every criticism can be a great opportunity to cast vision!! 

Criticism can be a sign that people do not understand the vision.  I would love to think that we would have 100% buy-in to what we do ... but that has not happened yet and I am beginning to think it never will. Some people will never understand why I don't use the KJV, wear a suit, or why we use the music we use, or why we love small groups, or why we value technology.  And I have to be okay with that. 

Godly convictions and principles do not have to be defended.  This is the lesson of Daniel 3:16-18.  We do not have to defend obedience, matters that have been settled and bathed in prayer, and anything attached to God's glory.

Weekly Rundown (8.10.08)


  • Great to have everyone starting to get back into the swing of church ... attendance at both campuses was strong as we continued our DOMINO series.

  • This Friday afternoon I had nothing "scheduled" so I just spent some time with God in prayer.  It was rich with conviction and vision.  Let's just say my clarity and passion for this church and its direction are at an all-time high!!

  • We kick-off our student ministry fall line-up this week at both campuses!!!

  • I absolutely love the Olympics!  The men's 4 x 100m freestyle relay was the most unbelievable finish I've ever seen (check it out here) ... GO USA!!!

  • Beth wants to go to China :)

  • Went to downtown Chattanooga last night ... that is one of our favorite places to go, eat, walk around, and enjoy the beautiful Tennessee River scenery.

  • Our volunteers rock!!

  • Heard some amazing facts and figures on the multi-site movement going on across America (how much it costs to launch a site, average attendance, etc.) ... what is happening at Rock Bridge Calhoun is simply amazing!!  (Most sites are in major metro areas, average 350-400 people, and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to launch!)

  • The launch of Stage 123 is coming real soon ... Jeremy Owens will be our worship leader over there and we're so excited about opening that venue!!  Please pray for Jeremy, for our Student Ministry, for Sunday worship services and for all God wants to do according to His plans and at His pace!!

How BIG are your prayers?

As we continue in our series DOMINO, I think we'll be challenged by the radical potential God have given us and wants to harvest for His purposes.  One of the greatest "potentials" any of us have is the privilege to pray. Here's a few questions that have spurred my thinking and praying:

  • Are your prayers broad and general or specific and definite? (God knows the hairs on our heads and is excited about the details.)

  • Are your prayers more about blessing and protecting you or blessing others and expanding God's love?

  • Are your prayers a "one hit wonder" with God or do you pray consistently and persistently?

  • Are your prayers part of your routine or part of your relationship with God?

  • Are your prayers small and timid or big and bold?

FAQs

How is Rock Bridge structured or governed?

We like to use the phrase, Elder-guarded, staff led, and volunteer-driven to describe our structure.  I'll break down the 3 pieces below.

Elder-guarded:  The Elders function in 3 big roles: discerners, guardians, and shepherds.  The Elders meet monthly to review ministry and financial reports.  They help the Pastor discern the right direction for the church and help steward the church's resources.  Major strategic decisions are approved through the Elders such as legal transactions, real estate decisions, etc.

Staff-led:  The staff leads the church on a day-to-day basis and is free to make most ministry decisions as long as they are aligned with the church's vision and supported by our budget. 

Volunteer-driven:  Simply put the vast majority of what happens at Rock Bridge is because of our wonderful volunteers.  To me this is where the church is the church.  The Bible teaches in Ephesians 4 that staff is to empower and equip the church body to build up the church body.  This is our staff's more important job ... making sure our volunteers are free to serve, to bless, and to be blessed.

Elder Selection

When you read the New Testament you see that Paul started a bunch of churches but he always worked to establish elders in the individual churches (Titus 1:5 -- "...appoint elders in every town, as I directed you." ).  Since our beginning in 2002 we have had Elders who along with the staff oversee the direction and resources of the church.  The Elders' wisdom, prayers, encouragement, and accountability are invaluable to me and to the strategic direction of our church.

All that to say that the time has come for Elder selection at Rock Bridge.  7 of our 11 Elders have terms that expire in December (all seven are eligible to serve another 3-year term).  To be considered for the position of Elder, a person must be nominated by another church member.  So if you would like to nominate someone to be an Elder, please read the qualifications below and prayerfully submit a name to elderselection@rockbridge.cc, along with a brief statement as to why you think they should be considered.

Elder Qualifications:

  • Titus 1:5-9

  • Been a member of Rock Bridge for at least one-year

  • Serve on a ministry team, participate in a small group, tithe

  • Be nominated by another church member

  • Be willing to serve as an Elder

  • Go through a selection process headed by the pastor and other Elders

  • Be affirmed by the church

The Rundown (8.3.08)


  • Great kick-off to our DOMINO series today ... good crowds at both campuses with energy, good vibe, and a message that was hopefully both challenging AND encouraging.

  • Great meetings this week on how our church needs to be organized, structured, and staffed to continue reaching more people for Christ. (Thanks Brad Leeper and Bryan Miles!)

  • First Wednesday this week at BOTH campuses!!

  • Georgia was ranked #1 in the Coaches' Poll (good sign??? OR kiss of death???)

  • Went white water rafting on Monday down the Ocoee River.

  • Our web site being down this long is unacceptable ... we'll be making some major changes soon, and I do apologize.

  • Been watching Shark Week this week on Discovery ... those animals fascinate me.

  • I may actually go to White Water in Atlanta tomorrow ... haven't been since high school.

  • I think our staff needs to get away on a working retreat real soon.  There are a lot balls in the air and we need to make sure nothing is out of alignment and we're all laser focused on our vision.

  • It's just really hot!!

FAQs -- Part 2

Already some great questions have come in ... here's today's question:

What denomination is Rock Bridge?

Rock Bridge is a locally autonomous church (which means we are self-governed and that all church decisions are made by church members and staff).  We voluntarily affiliate and cooperate with the Southern Baptist Convention for the purpose of missions and extending the message of Christ to the ends of the earth. Through the Southern Baptist Convention we support efforts to reduce world hunger, plant churches in North America, assist during times of disaster, and support missionaries overseas.

On a personal note, I am not much of a "denominations" person.   I think the danger of denominations is that if not careful the focus can drift away from Christ and onto the denomination.  At Rock Bridge our efforts are in helping to connect people to Christ first and foremost, rather than Christ PLUS a denomination.  However, I do believe that there is value in working together and cooperating with other like-minded churches who pool resources and efforts for the cause of Christ.

Weekly Rundown: 7.27.08


  • Great week this week at RBCC as we prepare for school to start back.

  • I usually try to be about 2-3 weeks ahead with my message prep ... this helps our worship teams and creative planning process.  However, I got behind with vacation so I buckled down and prepared two messages this week.  Our creative folks will be happy :)

  • I heard the other day that preaching one sermon is like running a 5k due to the emotions, adrenaline, etc.  That explains why I tend to crash Sunday afternoon!

  • Calhoun Blog is up and running: www.rockbridgecalhoun.com.  This is the place to know what's happening at our Calhoun campus.

  • We're making some progress in getting people to step up to facilitate new small groups.  Small groups are so important in building relationships and growing together in Christ.  GROUPLINK is coming up at both campuses in the next few weeks to connect people with a small group experience.

  • Football is just around the corner and yes I plan on doing Football Friday again.

  • I can't tell you how pumped I am about our new series, DOMINO.  I am praying about this series and all that God wants to accomplish through it.  Please pray for me and this series.  It is going to be challenging, uplifting, life-altering, and God-glorifying.  (I'll post more this week about it ... just pray!)

  • Through a few "God" orchestrated circumstances, we were able to give away a car last week ... it was incredible!!

  • Dalton Student Ministry has a new staff member: John Melick.  We moved some staff around to better support our Children's Ministry at both our campuses and put Gus Waters full-time in Children's Ministry (Gus was spending time in both children and student ministry).  As a result our staffing in student ministry dropped to less than it was a year ago, and with more students and a new venue coming this Fall we needed to fill this hole.  John will be leading worship & student band, helping to get students involved & serving according to their gifts, programming our large group environments, and various other things.  John is a super musician with a great voice.  But even better is his character, humility, passion for excellence in worship, and desire to empower others to serve Christ.

  • I've got this "restless" peace going on right now ... "restless" about all that is going on and coming up but a ton of God's peace.  It's pretty cool ... I'm not in control but He is!

I was talking to a friend of mine who is a member of our church and he had some really great questions for me and how we do/why we do certain things.  As we talked more, I came to realize that there are a lot of things that people may not know about Rock Bridge that I assume they do know.  His conversation gave me the idea to do a post every so often just to answer some frequently asked questions. So if you have some questions about Rock Bridge or me or whatever, send us an email (matt@rockbridge.cc) and we'll work on answering them on this blog over time.

Today's Question: I want to get a new Bible.  What version do you teach from on Sunday mornings?

I teach from the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible.  It is an accurate translation, and it easy to read and understand the intended meaning of the text.

Weekly Rundown

Great to back after 2 weeks off!!  Here's the rundown this week:

  • Carll is also back from vacation today.  We've got one more staff member taking vacation this week, then we'll all be back in full force at the office.

  • I haven't ridden my bike since getting back from vacation ... and I need to.

  • The progress in Stage 123 is amazing!!

  • We've had lots of participation in our Life Focus groups (i.e. -- Marriage Enrichment, Romans, Divorce Care, etc.) this summer.  Most of these groups will be offered off and on throughout the year.  These are great, short-term groups that have a long-term impact.  Email connect@rockbridge.cc if you have any questions about Life Focus groups.

  • First Wednesday resumes in August ... and officially kicks-off in Calhoun!!

  • Our web site is still down ... sorry! The problem is not on our end but we're doing all we can to get it back up.

  • Our Children's Ministry team is now writing the curriculum we use on Sunday mornings ... and with great results.  Really proud of our team in Dalton & Calhoun ... those children environments are great.

  • I know people get saved in many ways but I spoke and prayed with a person who was saved in a very powerful way today ... it was so awesome!!  Seeing people come to Jesus is something that never gets old and is what it is all about!!!!!

  • Remember we have 500 seats opening up this Fall at 9:30 and 11:00 (total of 1000 seats).  That is HUGE!!  1000 seats = 1000 souls = 1000 people that could meet Jesus!!  Who are you praying for?  Who will you seek to invite?

  • Now I know some people who buy into the "church is too big" philosophy whenever you talk about church "growth".  I'd invite them to read Perry Noble's comments below for consideration (also consider that the first church went from 120 to 3000 in one day ... I'd love to be part of something like that!!)


The “This Is Too Big” Person

These people amaze me. A church will begin growing, lives will begin to change…literally the Bible begins to come to life…and because a person finally has to face the fact that the church is not about them…they take off, saying that the church is TOO BIG.  Now, that same person will go to a college football game the day before with between 80,000 to 100,000 fans (99% of whom they do not know) and be absolutely PUMPED that the stadium is packed. (Usually a sign that the team is winning!)  BUT…they want to go to “God’s house” the next day and desire for it to be small and “intimate.” Hmm, they want the football crowd to grow and the church crowd to be small… Bottom line…the church is SUPPOSED to grow–period! And if it gets “too big” for someone, I would say it’s because their heart is “too small.” Seriously, ask yourself, what spiritual force would motivate someone to get angry when large numbers of people are coming to Christ and being taught to walk in an intimate relationship with Him? Jesus…or satan?

  • Whether you agree with Perry or not, let's never forget that God's heart and His heaven are big enough for EVERY sinner who calls on the Name of His Son ... and we the church are called to preach that Name, live by that Name, and worship that Name ... and that Bible promises that when that Name is preached God will draw people to Himself!!

Moving On

About 20 months ago God brought Aaron Gable and his incredible family to Rock Bridge to serve as our Associate Pastor with an emphasis on small group ministry. Almost immediately Aaron and I became close friends, ministry partners, and fellow "church nerds" as we like to say. Aaron's passion for reaching disconnected people, his knowledge of group ministry, his loyalty to me and our vision, and his strategic thinking quickly had him making a big difference for the kingdom at Rock Bridge.

As our church grew during this time Aaron's role changed and moved him away from direct, "hands on" ministry as he focused more on administration, operations, staff management, hiring staff, and assisting me in efficiently running the church. Over the past few months Aaron and I began to discuss if he was really serving in his "sweet spot" according to his strengths, giftedness, and passions. In the course of those conversations and through much prayer Aaron decided that being an Associate Pastor was not the most effective place for him in ministry and asked the Elders to accept his resignation and to help him and his family transition to another place of service.

After a week of prayer, the Elders granted Aaron a two-week "leave of absence" to allow him to pray and think through where God might be leading him. Aaron also asked to resign effective on Tuesday, July 15th which the Elders have accepted.

This entire process has been very difficult for me because of the close and unique relationship Aaron and I share. Initially, I did not want to see Aaron leave Rock Bridge but as he and I talked and prayed, it became clear to me that in the long-run Aaron needed to be allowed to pursue other opportunities to serve in the way God has gifted him. Selfishly, I wanted Aaron to stay but that option did not make sense in light of where our church is right now and where Aaron is on his journey to serve Christ in the most impacting way possible. So when I asked what was the best thing for the Kingdom of God and ultimately for Aaron, I came to believe that accepting his resignation with my full support and blessing was God's will.

I asked Aaron to write part of this blog with me so that you can hear his heart and know how to pray for him during this transition:

Rock Bridge is one of the most amazing churches I've ever been a part of. I know many of you share my sentiments. Who could have predicted that in such a short time a church could made such a big impact in a community? The only explanation is that God is doing a mighty work through a willing and faithful people.

With this amazing, supernatural growth, I have been so inspired personally yet challenged professionally. Our church has grown to a point where my gifts, abilities, and experiences are not the best fit in areas that are needed for the Associate Pastor position for this church at this time. This is a hard personal admission for me. I did not come to this decision easily, but through several weeks of prayer and wise counsel, I have decided to resign as the Associate Pastor at Rock Bridge. This affects me and my family deeply because of our great affection for this church and community, but we are convinced this is God's best for us and the church. We covet your prayers during this time of transition as we seek out where God leads next.

In life I've come to learn that God has a plan and purpose for everything and He is teaching me to never doubt that He is in control.
